English Language Learner (ELL) Home Page

English Language Learners or ELL are students whose first language is not English. The Middle School ELL student has the challenge of acquiring a second language, while also learning content information in their Science, Social Studies, Math and Reading/Language Arts classes. It is important that the ELL student practice their English as much as possible by conversing with their peers, watching tv with the CC set to English, reading English texts at their English ability level and various other ways. While English is important to survival and success in the US, it is equally important that the ELL student not lose their first language and culture. This can be a tough juggling task at first, but does get easier the further they are along in their English language acquisition.

In Tennessee, we assess all ELL students with the WIDA ACCESS 2.0 online assessment program. This test takes place in February-March and covers the four primary levels of English acquisition in Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening. Based upon their test scores, the student will be provided with up to an hour of English instruction by a certified ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) Endorsed teacher.

In Tennessee we also us the WIDA Can Do Descriptors. These descriptors give examples of what an ELL can do at different levels of English Acquisition. You can read more about the Can Do Descriptors in the files located at the right of this window.

Los estudiantes del idioma inglés o ELL son estudiantes cuyo primer idioma no es el inglés. El estudiante ELL de la escuela intermedia tiene el desafío de adquirir un segundo idioma, al tiempo que aprende información de contenido en sus clases de Ciencias, Estudios Sociales, Matemáticas y Lectura / Artes del Lenguaje.
